The Palo Alto Weekly, an award-winning, weekly community newspaper, is looking for interns with a voracious appetite for news, a hunger to learn and intrepid reporting skills. Interns work in the editorial department and are introduced to all aspects of putting together a newspaper from interviewing and reporting on the issues that make a community's heart beat to seeing first-hand the process of putting together a newspaper. Writing assignments cover city government issues, neighborhood news, business, arts and in-depth features. Interns are encouraged to attend weekly planning meetings with the editorial assistant. Interns hit the ground running, writing published articles and receiving feedback.
Interns should be responsible, reliable, independent, have good writing skills and be able to write stories on deadline. Some journalism course work or experience is preferred. Interns work approximately 20 hours per week. About two thirds of an intern's time is spent reporting and writing and one third performing other duties. Internships last 13 weeks. Interested applicants should email Linda Taaffe a resume, a well-written cover letter explaining your experience and interest in journalism, and several clips.
